Amy Plum’s Daily Devoirs: The Guerre Dev

La Guerre est un Fleau

I found this inscription in Cannes, carved into the side of a building that dates from 1925. The French-English translation means “War is a scourge.” Create the person you think commissioned this relief and tell me the story behind it.

Her name was Florentine of The Valley. She was a scant four or five years old when the Great War – known to us today as WWI – broke out. She recalled her father’s vineyard overflowing with strange people with strange accents. For years, her home was a borrowed residence to transient souls trying to escape this thing called “war”. She didn’t understand its purpose, its value in advancing us forward as human beings since all she ever saw were the sad faces of displaced people. When the Great War ended, the flow of strangers staunched and life on the vineyard took a powerfully wonderful turn as year upon year, their vineyards produced the best wines ever made. It wasn’t until she was a bright eighteen year old that she wandered to a lesser visited cellar and found relics of days of old, bits left by those weary travelers, their lives overturned for what she thought a scourge. While visiting Cannes, she saw a beautiful building but thought it lacked something. That was the moment it came to her. As a lady of society, she was limited to what she could say or do, so she commissioned a relief so the building could do the talking for her:
